Google always has really creative doodles–those creative pictures
that they put above the search box. On March 4, 2013, the doodle is
dedicated to a lady, known to many as Mama Africa.
Miriam Makeba would have been 81 years old today. A singer with a
powerful voice, and even more powerful message, she found herself exiled
for her songs against the unjust nature of apartheid. Her most popular
songs included ‘Pata Pata’, ‘Malaika’, the ‘Click Song’ but any
performance by her was a treat. Her voice was gentle, yet powerful; her
message important and timely.
On her 81st birthday we celebrate the woman that made us think about
apartheid, see it for what it really was, and mobilize to make a
difference.
Happy birthday Miriam Makeba. You are sorely missed.
